Flatiron’s First Legal Dispensary Founder Speaks on Bringing Cannabis to the Historic District

NEW YORK, NY – (August 13. 2025) – On July 10th, 2024, Stoops NYC opened its doors as the Flatiron District’s first licensed cannabis dispensary, marking a cultural milestone for one of Manhattan’s most historic neighborhoods.

Founded by Chris Kuilan, a longtime legal cannabis advocate and native New Yorker, Stoops aims to provide an experience deeply rooted in New York art, culture, and community.

New Yorkers know “the Stoop” is where people come together to share stories, laugh, unwind, and be visionaries,” said Kuilan. “We wanted to break the traditional dispensary feel and create a space rooted in New York energy.”

Overcoming Industry Hurdles to Build Community Trust

Operating in a heavily regulated industry comes with unique challenges, from strict advertising restrictions to complex tax laws.

“We can’t advertise traditionally, and tax rules like 280E are tough, but we’re always learning, growing, and finding creative ways to connect with our community,” said Kuilan.

Flatiron, a district known for its affluent residents and global businesses, has also presented unique cultural challenges. “Flatiron is a beautiful neighborhood, but there’s still a stigma about cannabis. We’re slowly breaking that down by creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment and hosting events that highlight local creativity,” he added.

Stoops is looking ahead to further integrate with the Flatiron community, offering guides and recommendations to help locals and visitors discover all the area has to offer – from food and nightlife to cultural landmarks.

“As Flatiron’s first licensed dispensary, we embrace the community just as it has embraced us,” said Kuilan. “Our goal is to highlight local businesses and events, giving our growing audience a complete Flatiron experience.”

Stoops is actively seeking collaborations with local artists, fashion designers, content creators, nonprofits focused on social and criminal justice reform, and nearby businesses to create a network of advocates that highlight the neighborhood’s creativity and culture.
