Neighborhood Guide to Flatiron

The Flatiron District is where classic architecture merges with tech offices, high-end restaurants, a scenic park, and some of the most walkable streets in the city.

Centered around its famous wedge-shaped building, it stretches between Union Square and NoMad.

I’ll walk you through what makes the Flatiron District special—from its history and landmarks to food, culture, and how it fits into the larger downtown Manhattan.

Where Is the Flatiron District?

The Flatiron District‘s core is defined by Broadway and Fifth Avenue, running north–south, with 23rd Street at the top and Union Square North (around 17th Street) at its southern edge.

It’s perfectly positioned between the city’s most active neighborhoods—NoMad to the north, Union Square to the south, Chelsea to the west, and Gramercy to the east.

The Origin

The neighborhood gets its name from the Flatiron Building, completed in 1902. Its triangular shape, created by the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue, resembles a cast-iron clothes iron. The nickname stuck, and soon the entire area became known as the Flatiron District.

How History Still Shapes Flatiron Today

What makes Flatiron special is it’s historic architecture. Even with modern offices and sleek storefronts, Flatiron feels grounded in it’s roots. That balance of history and reinvention is what defines the neighborhood and why it continues to draw people in.
